Question : A ball with charge -50e is placed at the centre of a hollow spherical shell has a net charge of -50e. What is the charge on the shell's outer surface?
a) -50e
b) Zero
c) -100e
d) +100e

Doubt by Shiv

Solution : When the charge of -50e is placed at the centre of the hollow spherical shell then a charge of +50e will be induced on the inner surface of the shell as a result an equal and opposite charge (of -50e) will be induced on the outer surface of the spherical shell too.

But it is already given that a charge of -50e is already present on the surface of spherical shell. So the net charge on the outer surface of the shell would be -100e [-50e+(-50e)].

So option c) -100e would be the correct answer.
